WHAT IS DRY EYE?

Dry eye is a common issue that affects millions of Americans. It occurs when an issue impacts the quality or quantity of tears you produce. Fewer or lower quality tears can then lead to uncomfortable dry eye symptoms.

Several issues can lead to dry eye. Our mission is to determine the root cause of your symptoms and develop alleviating strategies based on your needs.

DRY EYE RISK FACTORS

Several factors can contribute to dry eye:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Environmental factors
  • Medical conditions
  • Contact lens wear

Alongside these, lifestyle factors like digital device use can also contribute to symptoms.

DRY EYE SYMPTOMS

Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Burning sensation
  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Feeling of grittiness
  • Difficulty with contact lenses
  • Blurred vision
  • Light sensitivity

Severe dry eye could also increase the risk of corneal damage and eye infections.

CONTRIBUTING DRY EYE CONCERNS

Managing dry eye is also about managing some of its most common causes and symptoms.

Meibomian gland dysfunction and blepharitis are among the most common issues associated with dry eye, and we look for these concerns whenever we check your eyes.

By detecting these problems early, we can help preserve your eye comfort—sometimes even before you experience symptoms.

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common issue that contributes to dry eye. It occurs when blockages form in the eyelid glands responsible for providing quality tears.

MGD affects over 1 billion people around the world.

Blepharitis is an issue known for causing inflammation in the eyelid. It can also cause flaky skin around the eyelids, swelling, blurry vision, and falling eyelashes.

It can develop if you have meibomian gland dysfunction or if there is too much bacteria on your eyelid.

DIAGNOSING DRY EYE

There are several ways we can look for signs of dry eye. One method includes LipiScan, which gives us detailed images of your meibomian glands, helping detect signs of meibomian gland dysfunction. Other techniques we may use include:

  • Measuring tear break-up time
  • Tear staining/dyes
  • InflammaDry tear testing

We can recommend a strategy based on what may be causing your discomfort.

OUR DRY EYE TREATMENTS

Dry eye is common and often chronic. Even if you only experience mild symptoms, you might need regular treatment to help keep your eyes comfortable.

These treatments can range from at-home strategies like prescription and non-prescription eye drops, but we can also recommend in-office techniques—or a combination of both.

For more information about these techniques, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us today.

OptiLight by Lumenis is a light-based, noninvasive treatment done in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. The first and only IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management.

Learn more about this approach on our OptiLight IPL page. We currently offer OptiLight IPL in our Livingston location.

Meibomian gland expressions help remove blockages in your meibomian glands. These treatments are done in-office. We might use additional techniques depending on what your symptoms are.

Some at-home strategies include:

  • Prescription & non-prescription eye drops
  • Warm compresses
  • Eye sprays & cleansers
  • We can also recommend a few lifestyle changes to help support your eye comfort.

We offer omega-3 supplements to help support healthy tear production.
